THE GHANA FEDERATION OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE PRACTITIONERS’ ASSOCIATIONS, (GHAFTRAM). The first Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association, the Ghana Psychic and Traditional Healing Association, now known as the Ghana Psychic and Traditional Healers Association was established in 1960 under the auspices of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and reconstituted in 1975 bringing all Practitioners under one umbrella Association.
In 1991, the government of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) under the auspices of the Council for Indigenous Business Association (CIBA) set up the National Council of Herbal Medicine, now known as the Ghana National Association of Traditional Healers (GNATH). All these interventions had various limitations which impeded the development of the sector. As a result, in September 1999, the new constitution which brought into being the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners Associations, GHAFTRAM, an umbrella body for all Traditional Medicine Practitioners Associations and Societies or Groups was born.
The purpose of the formation of the Federation was to;
To continuously improve the delivery, accessibility, and quality of Traditional Health services to all persons resident in Ghana to attain international standards.
GHAFTRAM seeks partnerships with relevant stakeholders and international organisations in the following areas;
The new national executives are of the firm conviction that traditional medicines, (Plant medicines) hold the prospects for economic prosperity.
The integration of TM or Herbal Medicine into the mainstream Health care system in Ghana has been successful. Currently about 55 government hospitals across the country provide services to their patients. GHAFTRAM through the support of other stakeholders have listed about 106 Herbal Medicinal Products as part of integration of TM into mainstream health care in Ghana. The legal frame work to regulate the practice and the products is almost completed and the Ministry of Health has produced a book on the Recommended Herbal Medicines List.
During the COVID 19 Pandemic, the Federation submitted 33 Herbal Medicinal Products to the Ministry of Health to analysis for COVID 19, report received from CPMR indicates that 19 of the products could be used to help fight the Symptoms of the COVID 19. A Committee was constitute at the Ministry of health in which GHAFTRAM was a member to establish comprehensive evaluation of the products.
The Secretariat has fervently worked to ensure the Federation has representatives in all it’s constitutionally mandated boards.
The Federation offers in service Training to her members across Ghana in which protocols on how to formulate and prepare TM are demonstrated. Members are allowed to ask any question in relation to their field of practice.
Ghaftram in collaboration with Traditional Medicine Practice Council offers training on Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to the members.
Ghaftram in collaboration with Food and Drugs Authority offers training on Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) to her members.
Mental Health Society of Ghana (MEHSOG) in collaboration with GHAFTRAM under OSIWA fund offered training program to about 200 members of the federation who offer services to mental Health Patient.
GHAFTRAM has acquired 7.8 acres of Land at Gyaadzi near Winneba in the Central Region for a proposed office complex and a training school.
